Savage Arms to add additional calibers to MSR 10 lineup

Written by Jacki Billings

Savage Arms announced the MSR 10 lineup will receive a little sprucing up come January, when the company rolls out new cartridge options for the AR-10 series.

The MSR 10 Hunter and Long Range will both see new additions, with the Hunter nabbing .338 Federal and the Long Range model launching a 6mm Creedmoor variant.

Savage's MSR 10 features a compact AR-10 design decked out with BLACKHAWK furniture. Both the Hunter and Long Range showcase a BLACKHAWK KNOXX AR Pistol Grip and BLACKHAWK trigger. The Hunter takes the BLACKHAWK love a step further, utilizing the AXIOM Carbine Stock. Both ARs also boast a free-float M-LOK handguard.

Already available in .308 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor, the .338 Federal MSR 10 Hunter will adhere to the same specs as the .308. The .308 offers a 7.8-pound rifle with 1:10-inch 5R, right hand rifling on its barrel. Savage says the .338 Federal cartridge provides a “necked up” take on the .308, delivering faster muzzle velocity and a heavier bullet.

The MSR 10 Long Range also currently provides .308 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor options, but looks to expand versatility with the “necked down” 6mm Creedmoor. The Long Range features a compact AR design paired with a non-reciprocating side charging handle and Magpul PRS Gen 3 buttstock.

Savage said the .338 Federal and 6mm Creedmoor rounds are popular among precision rifle shooters due to the rounds' fast velocity and flat trajectory.

“The case design allows room for long, heavy bullets while still functioning in short action rifles,” Savage said in a statement. “Further the rounds don’t beat up its shooter with recoil.”

Though Savage hasn’t dropped an official release date, the rifle maker says consumers can expect to see the new calibers sometime in January. The MSR Hunter in .338 Federal will slide into the market carrying a price tag of $1,481, while the MSR Long Range in 6mm Creedmoor offers a slightly elevated price of $2,284.
