SB Tactical, whose motto is Replicate, don't simulate has released a new video explaining a training product called the irPistol Pro. The irPistol Pro is built to match a Glock 9mm in size, weight, dimensions and action and produces an infrared beam with the trigger press. This can be used with various IR receptive targets to provide feedback you could not get from traditional dryfire iterations. There is a muzzle flash when you pull the trigger, accompanied by noise and recoil.
The training “non-gun” utilizes eight gram CO2 cartridges in what they call the “SmartMag” to power the weapon (providing impetus for recoil) as well as for round accountability so you can run dry — we're not sure if it will go to slide lock or not. The IR target it ships with is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. It's made in the USA and can be purchased with additional magazines and targets.
It's certainly a step up from standard dryfiring with a cleared weapon, and appears at first glance to have some advantages over the SIRT gun (but you can buy half a dozen SIRT guns for the price of a single irPistol too).
Says SB Tactical,
“No brass, no ammo. In home firearms training with the Icombat Pro. This is an American made dedicated trainer. Not an airsoft gun, not a dry fire static trigger. Infra Red laser registers on targets and can be linked with our ICE software.”
You know, it might just be easier to have you watch the video.
I'm going to try to get my hands on one. I'll report further how it holds up and performs. I dryfire, I go to the range as often as I can, I use my SIRT gun like mad; I'll admit, this irPistol intrigues me. Although the cost is high, I don't think I'll be alone in that, particularly at the institutional (i.e. agency/unit level).
