Trump on Schumer’s Tears – “I don’t see him as a crier.”

President Trump has outraged people once again (or reoutraged them), this time by questioning whether Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was actually crying during a recent press conference about the recent executive order on immigration.

Trump on Schumer's Tears – “I don't see him as a crier.”

Schumer, appearing on stage surrounded by children and refugees, described the Executive Order as “mean spirited and un-American.” He appeared to choke up while delivering his statement.

Trump later made reference to the event, saying,

“I noticed that…Chuck Schumer yesterday with fake tears. I'm going to ask him who is his acting coach. Because I know him very well. I don't see him as a crier. If he is, he's a different man. There's about a 5 percent chance it was real, but I think they were fake tears. “

The statement begins at about 00:33.

In a later tweet he referred to the 18-year senator as Fake Tears Schumer.

Response to his statement was swift and venomous from both sides of the pro/anti-Trump coin. Assorted television pundits (Joy Behar, Whoopie Goldberg) and others of a liberal bent (comedienne Amy Schumer) were quick to decry Trump's statement. Others apparently felt much the same way.

One such was former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kirk, who said he found the whole scene “quite appalling,”

“You didn't cry on September 11th, you never cried with me or Rudy [Guliani].”

Sen. Schumer himself later responded, saying,

“President Trump should learn that name-calling is not going to solve the many problems this administration has already brought upon itself.”

The executive order in question was released on January, 2017, and entitled Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry to the United States (DHS statement on that EO here). It has been variously described by critics as “clumsy”, “poorly planned”, “badly implemented”, and “Islamophobic.” Others, however, have pointed out the order is based on the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention of Act of 2015, an Obama-era law. They call attention to the Omnibus Appropriations Act of FY2016, 8 U.S. Code § 1187, the actual numbers of immigrants allowed into the United States over the last decade (available at MigrationPolicy.org) vs. what has been declared permissible by President Trump, and the original legislation articulating what countries required greater scrutiny — legislation that was criticized by civil rights activists at the time but largely ignored by mainstream media outlets.

Others counter accusations of Islamophobia by pointing out that 6 of the countries involved are failed states and the 7th an avowed enemy of the U.S., although this is doubtless of little comfort to Iraqi interpreters and certain others encountering difficulty while attempting to enter the US. The countries called out for increased DHS scrutiny in the EO are seven of approximately fifty predominantly Muslim countries in the world (the latter number is obviously dependent upon how predominantly is defined).

Interestingly, the original EO only mentions the country of Syria by name, referring to others affected as “countries of concern.” Countries of concern are identified by the Department of Homeland Security; all of those currently at the center of the controversy were actually labeled so by DHS during President Obama's tenure (such as in this announcement declaring Somalia, Libya, and Yemen to be a risk).

Unfortunately, few of those involved on either side of the public argument have any idea what the VWP actually does. Most are responding viscerally, either due to partisanship or the surge in pictures of refugee children on social media.

We invite those people to read the following. Afterward, raise hell all you want in either direction. Now at least you'll be doing so in an informed fashion.
