Photos By Matchgrade Media and Tom Marshall They say legends never die and, in the firearms world, few designs are as legendary as the 1911. In recent years, there has been a massive uptick in market demand for both single- and double-stack 1911s. It’s iconic lines, battlefield pedigree, and undisputed trigger have imbued it with timeless curb appeal. Many of the modern iterations have focused on innovating or expanding on the original design — new calibers, higher capacity, different magazines, performance-boosting additions like ports or comps. Among all the buzz at SHOT Show 2026, Springfield and Lipsey’s announced an exclusive collaboration with retired FBI SWAT veteran and 1911 pistolsmith Hilton Yam of 10-8 Performance. Understated, elegant, and utterly functional, this pistol truly earns its namesake: the 10-8 Performance Masterclass. FIRST LOOKS & FIRST SHOTS We’re not 1911 purists. While it is perfectly acceptable and wholly American to own pistols for historic value or ballistic amusement, a sidearm that’s intended for anything more ought to be at least compatible with 21st century innovation. Having said that, there’s also no need to turn a 1911 into something else entirely. The Masterclass walks this line with all the grace of a ballerina en pointe. The exterior is a clean, slab-sided tribute to the history of custom practical 1911s with a mix of traditional and modern appointments. The railed frame, Agency optics cut, G10 grips and fiber-optic front sight are thoroughly modern additions that keep the Masterclass up to par with current duty-pistol trends. But these features are offset by others that serve as distinct nods to the historical cottage industry of high-end custom single stacks. The square trigger guard is a notable homage to the likes of the late Armand Swenson. The solid trigger, 20-LPI checkering, and skeletonized hammer can all be found sprinkled throughout the catalogs of 1911 builders going back five decades. We were particularly intrigued by the slide serrations, more coarse than traditional those on an original 1911 but not blocky, sharp, or overly stylized — just slightly abbreviated, ending in subtle angled swipes. Those who are familiar with 10-8 Performance or Yam’s custom builds from years past may recognize the style. This is a great signature that is not only a part of custom 1911 history, but of the legacy of 10-8 Performance itself. The barrel is finished in black DLC, with the slide and frame nearly color-matched with black cerakote. The mainspring housing includes a two-piece magwell that remains unobtrusive while making reloads a little smoother. In the spirit of 1911 traditionalism, we chose to run our performance review with iron sights only — a rarity for us nowadays. The serrated, U-notch rear was fast and forgiving. The green fiber-optic front was thick enough to sink quickly into the notch and provided a fast, bright pick-up point under desert sun. The recoil was exactly what we like in a Government size 1911, soft and predictable with a slight wave-like feel to it. In recent years, it seems that pistols have trended more toward full-size frames with shorter slides. This often creates a short, snappy recoil impulse with a quick return-to-zero that appeals to many shooters. But the heavier slide and longer stroke cycle create an undeniably smooth shooting experience that feels like the ballistic equivalent of driving a Lincoln Towne Car. We shot C-zone steel as far as 50 yards. Hits were a little harder to come by at that yardage but still happened regularly. On paper, groups were as good or better than any other pistol we’ve ever shot, and we experienced zero stoppages or malfunctions of any kind with a grab bag of ammo several hundred rounds deep. We’d say it’s boringly consistent, but its hard to call a gun this rich in niche Browning history a bore of any kind. The only thing worth noting — we refuse to call it a complaint — is that the square trigger guard does hamper your holster choice. Unless, of course, you run a rail-frame 1911 as intended: with a light on it. In that case, holster selection remains anything that will accept your weapon light of choice. With 1911s being thinner than a lot of striker-fired guns, a light-equipped Masterclass should fit many (most?) of the semi-universal holster on the market whose retention mechanism is molded around the light. THE REST OF THE STORY Not all “signature guns” are created equal, but the Masterclass 1911 is one of the best examples of this type of collaboration we’ve seen. Far more than an OEM product with a different roll mark, the Masterclass includes parts designed and released by 10-8 Performance as well as internal specifications personally dictated by founder Hilton Yam whose 21-year career as an FBI Special Agent included 19 on SWAT and was inextricably linked to the 1911 platform. During this time period, FBI’s SWAT teams, as well as the Hostage Rescue Team, were carrying Springfield Professional 1911s in .45 ACP. As his team’s lead firearms instructor, and a USPSA competitor, he spent years honing his pistol craft on Browning’s iconic single-stack design. His competition experience led him to take a more in-depth interest in gunsmithing the 1911. This knowledge, fused with his real-world operational experience carrying it for tactical duty, led to the genesis of 10-8 Performance — which released a line of custom parts in addition to full custom pistol builds and provided armorer’s training for both the 1911 and 2011. Springfield states that every Masterclass starts with a forged carbon steel frame and slide that are hand-checked for fit then numbered to remain matched through the build process. The bull barrel is cone fit and sports a reverse plug from 10-8 Performance. The use of a reverse plug maintains the proven GI guide rod design while still allowing for toolless takedown. No bushing wrench or bent paperclip needed for disassembly. Other 10-8 parts include extended mag catch, extended and contoured slide stop, flat trigger and G10 grips that include a unique symbol inlaid into the grip. When we asked about it, Yam stated: “The symbol on the grip panel is my family name in Chinese. My father wrote the symbol for me to use when I started marking my first custom 1911 builds back in 2001.” He also gave us a little more background on the development of this project: “My longtime friend Jason Cloessner, Senior VP & Product Development Manager at Lipsey’s, and I had been trying some years back to get a signature gun project off the ground. I think it took 15 to 20 years, but we found the perfect partner with Springfield Armory and were fortunate to get them on board with this project. Jason and I agreed that we wanted the build to be something that I would have wanted to carry at my old job, where my team had been issued the Springfield Professional 1911. It had to have modern features like a light rail and optic cut, as well as a representative set of my signature parts and features. The cone barrel was one of the other features that I wanted, as it provides a significant reduction in recoil. The square trigger guard was a nod to the ’80s-era custom 1911s that I grew up shooting and admiring.” There is a cosmic symmetry to the 10-8 Masterclass being manufactured by Springfield Armory, the same brand carried by Yam for nearly two decades of Federal duty. It’s available exclusively through Lipsey’s and we understand this will be a standard stocked item and is not a limited edition or fixed quantity run. Arguably John Browning’s masterpiece, the 1911, has seen thousands of iterations over more than a hundred years. This one in particular is one of the most nuanced executions we’ve seen. It combines a thorough modernization based on real-world tactical experience with a couple of subtle nods to historical improvements, all while staying faithfully true-to-form in final execution. The $2,099 MSRP puts it squarely in the “reasonably priced” column, as the 1911 market goes, and offers immense value for price against other options. If you’ve been waiting for high-quality, modernized 1911 for business or pleasure, the Masterclass is officially “in service” … or 10-8 in police radio parlance.
