SureFire’s new IntelliBeam

I'm stoked that this is finally available. IntelliBeam is a new P2X Fury variable beam light that auto-adjusts to proximity and prevalent light conditions. It's badass; I think we'll see it appeal primarily to LEOs at least in the beginning but I'm sure use will spread.

“IntelliBeam Technology” (P2XIB) refers to the lights reactive sensor, which operates on a microprocessor to continuously adjust light output based on the immediate environment. Pointing it at a clip board a foot and half away? It'll dim down. Swinging it up to light up the vehicle stopped ahead of you or to investigate that noise across the yard? It powers up, delivering what SureFire calls the “right amount of light for the task at hand.”

Says SureFire,

“This cutting-edge technology also helps preserve dark-adapted vision by evaluating the environment before turning on, so it never activates on high in close quarters. If you’re in an open field, you’ll get all 600 lumens. If you’re prepping gear or loading a vehicle, it will dial in the necessary output based on the environmental feedback it receives, down to as little as 15 lumens. Just press or click the tailcap switch to engage this auto-adjusting mode. To override this mode, simply return to off and press or click again within one second to activate the max-output/tactical mode. This second press or click locks in all 600 lumens where maximum output is needed. The P2XIB defaults to IntelliBeam mode when it’s off for more than one second.”

I've seen prototypes and early models in action, indoors, and I was impressed. The problem for some will be the cost — with an MSRP of $229 it's not going to be for everyone, and there will definitely be a lot of haters. If you work the night shift or understand the potential value of the new tech you'll probably understand why it may very well be worth the price.

The question for me is, will it take a beating? That remains to be seen. No point dropping a couple hundred bucks on a light that goes tits up if you drop it on the pavement. While I've never had any problems with my SureFires before (and I've had several) I remain skeptical of any new development until its proven.

I'll admit though, I really hope the IntelliBeam Fury reaches its potential, and I'm even more intrigued by the potential weapon-mounted light use of the new tech on down the road.

The P2X Fury uses a reflector-focused LED light in a knurled aerospace aluminum body that has been hard anodized for additional corrosion resistance. It runs on two (2 x) 123A lithium batteries.
