New Products: Uncovered – Concealment 10

The zZz Clip might sound like a device to treat sleep apnea, but it’s actually a nifty attachment point for your Kydex holster, magazine pouches, or knife sheath that’s modular and MOLLE compatible. That means you can also use it to connect your accessories to your vest or link smaller packs to your go-bag’s webbing panel; its fastening abilities are limited only by your imagination. The patent-pending clip is made of a lightweight, injection-molded nylon blend, resistant to heat, cold, and impacts. The zZz Clip comes in a finished two-pack and is also available, undrilled, in a four-pack.

Federal Premium Ammunition recently added a range round to its lineup of American Eagle Syntech ammo that’s more in line with defensive loads: 124-grain 9mm Luger. The Syntech bullet eliminates copper and lead fouling and metal-on-metal contact between the bullet and the barrel, because it’s encapsulated in polymer instead of copper. Combined with clean-burning propellants and an exclusive Catalyst primer, the round keeps your gun’s guts cleaner for longer while providing consistent performance and less perceived recoil. Plus, without a copper jacket, there’s reduced splash-back on steel targets.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-ZORE-02.JPG

The Zore X Core dismisses the conventional concept of a gun lock. This caliber-specific electromechanical device has a cartridge-shaped unit that sits in the chamber, expanding and locking the slide if someone attempts to charge the gun. To unlock, just rotate its combination dial. You don’t need to start from a specific position and can turn it in either direction, because the dial counts the clicks and recognizes the correct sequence. Once unlocked, rack the slide to eject the lock and chamber a live round. The CR2 battery is said to last for 3,500 locks/unlocks or two or three years of standard use. Zore X Core provides an added layer of safety when temporarily storing your gun outside a safe.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-TEKTO-01.jpg

Tekto Gear takes established genres and puts a fresh spin on them, either with unusual design lines or hybridizing conventional methods to create something unique. Such is the case with the Amber. This out-the-front automatic knife has a 3.8-inch steel blade with chrome added during the smelting process to boost corrosion resistance and edge retention. Meanwhile, its smooth handle features an elegant reddish woodgrain. Sleek, robust, discreet, and slightly steampunk-esque, this OTF auto is great for everyday carry. Just make sure auto knives are legal in your region.

As concealed carry compensators become more popular, we’re seeing more options beyond the basic Carver Custom. Nearly all require the use of set screw(s) that dig into your barrel, some kind of thread locker, or both. Archon Manufacturing took a different approach with its Glock Compensator. Though there’s a pair of set screws involved, they won’t muck up your barrel. Archon split the threads; the screws just compress them to the barrel. To install, spin the comp on, index it, and tighten the two screws. No thread-locking compound needed. If you’re the type who likes to hot swap muzzle devices or detail clean your pistols, this one is for you. Though it’s labeled “Glock,” it’s compatible with any 9mm barrel with ½-28-inch threads.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-APEXTRIGGER-002.JPG

FN 509 guys have been waiting for the custom, drop-in trigger this pistol deserves. Apex began working on the FNS version of the trigger back in 2014, but took a tactical pause when the company realized improving the factory trigger with a drop-in replacement meant redesigning the trigger bar and trigger body, making a new polymer trigger safety, and manufacturing a sear. It’s been a spell, but Apex got back on the case and the trigger is finally here. We were only able to dry-fire a prototype, but if the production version is anything close to this, we’re down for one. The best way to describe the feel is a thick 1911 break with zero overtravel. Apex will release two versions, one for the FN 509 and the FNSc, and another for the remaining FNS models.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-FLEX.JPG

The Phlster Flex gives you a way to combine a few different pouches into a single loadout. It’s a Hypalon panel (a thin, rubber-ish, incredibly strong fabric) with a field of custom, laser-cut slots and dots that work with the spacing of Phlster’s holsters, as well as third-party holsters, sheaths, and pouches. Coming in three sizes, the larger of the two includes a hardware kit that provides a bunch of Chicago screw parts, a flexible loop, and an IWB hard loop. The configurations are bound by only your imagination. Combine a pistol holster with a mag carrier and a blade for a single IWB EDC rig, or use a kit to convert carry items into a PALS carry panel for a pack. Look for the “PHLster Flex Users Group” on Facebook for more ideas.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-VZDAGGERS.JPG

Nonmetallic blades are always fun. We’re not saying something like VZ Grip’s line of G10 and G10/carbon-fiber pokers are made to defeat metal detection fields, but that’s what we’ve heard. The Discrete is the smallest shiv, the Executive is a handful, and the Don is for guys who want to make a statement while opening the mail. The tips are sharp, but the blades aren’t really slashers, though the material is easily shaped and resharpened with sandpaper. When choosing between the carbon fiber and G10 versions of these blades, keep in mind that there’s evidence that some metal detectors can alert on carbon fiber when it’s brought into very close contact.

The Bore Snake was an instant classic from birth. One problem with the ultra-convenient cleaning tool, though, is how to store the thing without getting carbon, cleaner, and lube all over everything it comes in contact with. Now Bore Snakes have a new slick hard case with a lid that doubles as a pull handle for the cleaning cord’s brass end. The rest of the feature set is unmolested — a brass-weighted cord attached to a bore-specific cleaning rope with embedded brass brushes that pulls through the bore for a quick cleaning when that’s all you’ve got time for.

RECC-180031-UNCOVERED-DRIFTER-006.JPG

Drifting sights on any gun is always a three-handed pain in the ass fraught with the danger of raking a punch along the top of a steel slide, forever memorializing your clumsiness with a jagged tattoo scrawled on a once-pristine surface. We won’t say this’ll never happen with the Wyoming Sight Drifter, but this tool puts the chances greatly in your favor. Adjusting or installing dovetail sights with the tool entails holding the brass end against the sight while the other hand draws back the spring-captured steel hammer and lets it go for a controllable and repeatable tap. Need more power? Pull the hammer back a little further. We’ve used the tool to adjust pistol sights on the range without a vise, and it works well. It’s a simple tool that takes up as much room as a Sharpie in a range bag and seems like it’ll last forever.

Toting your everyday loadout in your favorite pants is a compromise. Stuff slides around on your beltline, and there’s always a trade-off when it comes to concealment; IWB clips are visible, even when their payload is tucked in. The AdaptivX jean maxes out on concealment, comfort, and even fashion without compromise. The pants are made from cone denim and feature a Hypalon band of webbing sewn right into the waistline. This is half the core of the IWS system, the other half being the AdaptivX concealment pouches that are sold separately. Alone, the pants feature a bevy of hidden unexpected storage options: five standard jean pockets, four special access pockets, slashed back yoke utility pockets, and darted thigh pockets — enough pockets to carry a mission’s worth of gear without raising an eyebrow.
