IN THE FIELD

Sometimes bigger is better, but maybe not when it comes to firearm accessories. The Collector is one of the smallest Armasight units, and in a lot of ways, that makes it one of the best. While the larger Commander 640 1.5-6x35mm has a longer detection range, the Collector is smaller in every way and more lightweight. Even with two batteries installed, the Collector weighed less than most LPVOs.

Because of this smaller form factor, it can be more versatile in the field. Even though this is designed as a weapon sight, its small size makes it great for detaching from the rifle and using it as a handheld device. Remounting should come with a zero check, but in our use, the Collector returned to zero without issue when installed back onto the same rifle and in the same Picatiny slot.

The menu and options are standard across Armasight’s offerings, making switching between units extremely easy. A 3-button design makes navigating the menu super easy, even in the field. While it’s worth it to take the time to set up things like reticle choice before you hit the range, changing your mind or trying new options is quick and easy.

Like other Amrasight thermal optics, the Collector has a wide range of reticle options, colors, and color pallets for the thermal image. These extra options help the Collector stay effective through a wide range of weather and thermal conditions.

Rated for up to .308 Winchester, the Collector is great for any hunter looking to expand and redefine what they are capable of. The reticle and ease of zeroing is great as a standalone weapon sight, but the compact size makes using the Collector for scouting and glassing just as easy.

Powered by the ArmaCORE 640 thermal core, every image is surprisingly crisp and well defined. Even in less-than-ideal thermal conditions, heat sources like animals are easy to make out much further than you might expect. The box listed max range is over 900 meters, and we’ve used the Collector well past 800 meters for detection. This range allows not only easier spotting of smaller animals, but also increases the safety when hunting in low-light conditions, making you more aware of what is around you.

On-board picture and video recording is activated with a press of the button and stores the files internally on the Collector. Copying and sharing the files is done via the USB-C port. This is honestly one of the things that makes thermal optics awesome because not only can you share your adventures, you can also look back and review the game tape for what you might have done better or do differently on the next hunt, trip, or however else you use the Collector.

LOOSE ROUNDS

Having gotten to use a wide range of Armasight’s thermal optics, the Collector 640 is a favorite for its size and ease of use. While the detection range is shorter than the larger Commander 640, the Collector still gets the job done with room to spare. Lightweight, easy to use, and packed with the same great features found in the larger models — the Collector is a winner for keeping things minimal and getting the most out of them.
