Featured Counterfeit Watch: Magpul UBR Edition Rob Curtis February 3, 2017 Join the Conversation At RECOIL, we review every product fairly and without bias. Making a purchase through one of our links may earn us a small commission, and helps support independent gun reviews. Learn More Some knock-off products are easy to spot. Rough edges and shoddy operation are dead giveaways. But some counterfeiters get access to authentic parts and tooling that makes their garbage-on-the-inside products look like the real thing on the outside. In an effort to prevent our readers from getting swindled (or even worse, hurt) we present RECOIL's Counterfeit Watch with the help of our friend and Brownells Gun Tech Keith Ford. Ford works in the Brownells returns department and sees all manner of things-that-shouldn't-be and is kind enough to share these photos comparing a fake Magpul UBR someone returned with a real UBR. This is the original 1.0 UBR; Magpul has released an updated, 2.0 version of the stock. Finish is noticeably different on adjustment switch on the fake. Spring and hinge pin is not stainless on fake. Finish on interior of compartment is glossy vs real UBR. Lettering and information is a sure tipoff that this is incorrect and notice that the 4 vent holes are missing that are present on the real UBR. Notice how the cheek rest protrudes past the back of the cap. Also, screw holding cap in instead of roll pin. Cap is loose flops around. Cheek rest is flush with cap. Notice numbers and letters are painted white while the numbers are engraved on the real UBR. Also machined slots are not straight. Especially the slot on the left and right side of position marker 2. Cold anodized and is easily scratched. Finish on real UBR is hard coat. Does not scratch. Fake uses Allen head screw with no vent hole. Real UBR uses slotted screw.
