MN Gun Caucus responds to Fatal shooting in Minneapolis

On Wednesday, February 2nd, 2022, just before 7 am local, Minneapolis SWAT entered a residence for the purpose of executing a search warrant involving homicide. Upon entry, they announced their purpose. Amir Locke, who was sleeping on a couch in the central room, according to the footage, was holding an FN Five-seveN. Moments after the firearm is identified, Locke was shot. Since then, the bodycam footage, as well as a series of statements, have been released regarding the shooting. The Minnesota Gun Caucus has weighed in on the shooting regarding the firearm.

In the cool winter air of Minnesota, tensions rise, with the recent memory of 2020 still playing in the collective memory of the city. As it does, voices seek to make sense of the death of Amir Locke, to parse out the circumstances and conditions that led to his death. Four factors continue to be brought up: who was and was not on the warrant, the method of entry by SWAT, the amount of time that transpired, and status of Locke as a firearm owner.

The shooting that took place in the early hours of February 2nd began with police entering the residence, an apartment which is required to yield entry to police in the execution of just such a warrant. The video does not show any attempts at announcing their position before entering the residence. After opening the door using the provided key or fob, SWAT announced the purpose of their entry. Upon seeing the firearm, one officer fired and hit Amir Locke three times.

The Minnesota Gun Caucus had this to say:

“As seen in the body-worn camera video released by Minneapolis Police, Mr. Locke appears to be sleeping on the couch during the execution of a no-knock warrant.”

The Associated Press reported that the warrant involving in a homicide investigation did not name Amir Locke. He did not have a criminal record, and was a legal gun owner according to multiple news reports. Not listed as a resident at the location where the shooting took place, Rob Doar of the MN Gun Caucus had this to say about his death:

“Mr. Locke did what many of us might do in the same confusing circumstances, he reached for a legal means of self-defense while he sought to understand what was happening,”

Calls for an investigation have been voiced, and the attention has turned once again to Minneapolis. Soon following, on February 3rd, the White House released a statement regarding its posture towards violence and firearms ownership in the country. It includes four new actions to be added targeting the illegal sale of firearms, weapons trafficking, violent crime, particularly with a firearm, and homemade firearms or ghost guns.

At this time it is not known what investigations will take place, nor what demonstrations are to follow.
