Officers Down in Baton Rouge

Multiple officers have been shot by an unknown number of assailants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Initial reports indicate three officer dead, from three to five more critically injured — though these are initial reports only and may be corrected.

The attack took place approximately one mile from Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters. Ongoing radio traffic tells us of a continued search for additional suspects and the deployment of more officers and canine units.

The ambush in Baton Rouge occurred just a few hours after a Milwaukee PD officer was ambushed in his car and shot several times.

The Baton Rouge Police Department website is online here. You can follow them on Facebook here.

Update 12:00 CST BRPD spokesman advises 3 officers dead, 3 officers injured.

Update 12:05 CST Sheriff’s Office spokesman advises one suspect was killed, additional suspects are at large, EOD robot is being used to check the body of the dead suspect for explosives.

Update 3:00 CST, from a press conference held by reprentatives of the City of Baton Rouge and the State of Louisiana:

Multiple local officers responded to a call placed to BRPD central dispatch at 8:40am of a “…guy walking with a rifle.”

Six officers were struck during the gunfight, 3 from BRPD and 3 from EBRSO.

2 Officers from BRPD were killed. 1 Deputy from EBRSO was killed.

1 Deputy has just been released from surgery and is in critical condition. 2 additional LEOs suffered non life-threatening wounds.

The officers hit ranged in experience from 1 year on to 10 or more. All were married and leave families behind.

LSP believes the murderer is the suspect who was killed on scene.

The Louisiana Sheriffs Association Task Force has been activated to assure continued LE service in the area; the US Attorney’s Office has pledged Federal support.

While the investigation is active, it is not an active shooter situation.

Agents from the ATF, FBI, and USMS are assisting, as are LEOs from other area agencies.

There will be another news conference at 1pm local tomorrow.
