Review: GTX Glock Multi-Tool

Recently I got my hands on the GTX Glock Armorers tool from Advance Dynamic. They describe it as a…

Let's see how she works in that role.

As the word ‘multi-tool' implies, there are several functions of the GTX.
-Needle nose pliers with wire cutters
-Knife with partially serrated blade
-Punch
-Flathead
-File with bottle opener
-Base pad removal tool

The GTX is constructed of steel and sports knurled grips made from G10. The body is slightly curved for the sake of ergonomics and all of the edges are rolled (the latter being especially important if you have to squeeze them particularly hard for some reason). All of the tools sans the pliers can be deployed while the GTX is closed and the pliers unfold in the typical fashion. Both the knife blade and the file/bottle opener are secured in place with a liner lock, and the knife has a thumb stud for easy one-handed deployment.

The pliers feature a spring to keep the jaws open; people tend to love or despise that feature. However, the spring is easily removed by hand if desired.

The punch works well and the flathead is especially useful for removal of the rear slide plate.

Occasionally there's a time to remove the factory base pads from your magazines. Maybe you're installing an extended capacity base pad, or perhaps your magazine simply is full of mud. Regardless of the reason, it can be pain in the ass. The real star of the GTX is the base plate removal tool–Advance Dynamic says that utilizing it is the absolute easiest way to remove a Glock base pad, and I have to agree. Place the nubbin (the technical term, obviously) into the detent on the base pad, and leverage the tool downward against the magazine body. Base pad pops off with no fuss or muss whatsoever.

Giving the base pad removal tool a glance, it looks like you might be able to use it to secure an AR-15 castle nut. Unfortunately, the angle is slightly too steep to use it effectively in that manner.

The Advance Dynamic GTX also comes with a case. Usually included pouches are poorly constructed nylon affairs. In the grand scheme of things, this one isn't bad. With that said, there is little doubt that this tool be most likely be naked or inserted into an HSG Taco pouch 100% of the time when not in use.

Overall the GTX is pretty well designed but not perfect; I would have forgone the file and perhaps included a 3/16 hex driver for the front sight in its stead. As opposed to fishing around for loose punches or flatheads to take down a Glock, the GTX lets you put it all in one place. I'm a fan of the base plate removal tool, and the knife and pliers are just good bonuses as far as I'm concerned.
