Learn More Ten years ago, Rugged Suppressors released their first silencer, the Surge762. Notably, you could adjust its length. It performed well and was a durable — but rather heavy — suppressor. In the years since, Rugged has built out its portfolio of products to cover a wide range of applications for rifles, pistols, and rimfire. However, Rugged returned to its roots this year, refining and modernizing its original can, resulting in the new SurgeX, a versatile multi-use 30-caliber suppressor. The original Surge762 had a removable module, which Rugged calls the ADAPT Module, that reduced its length from 9 to 7.5 inches, essentially long and less-long. You can cut the length by nearly a third by removing the ADAPT module — simply unscrew it and transfer the end cap to the main body. The SurgeX lengthens the removable portion by an inch. Including Rugged’s mount, this results in a length of 6.5 inches in the short configuration and 9 inches in the long — like their Razor762 and the original Surge762, respectively. This makes the short configuration more useful, a good choice if you’re looking for compactness and less gas blowback. It’s also quite a bit lighter than the original. Go with the long configuration for maximum sound suppression. There are three baffles in the main body and four in the removable module. The other big design change is the incorporation of the industry HUB standard. The main body is threaded 1.375×24, so you can tap into the plentiful bounty of mounts on the market. This allows you to standardize mounts across your guns, directly attach your cans, or tailor your set ups however you’d like. Though the SurgeX is HUB-compatible, it ships with the very good R.U.M. That said, Rugged ships the SurgeX with its Rugged Universal Mount (R.U.M.), which mates with their dual taper muzzle devices. This quick detach system features a front taper that concentrically locks up when you first spin on the suppressor; these coarse threads are also shielded from carbon build-up. Then, you tighten the locking collar, which engages the rear taper and secures the silencer in place. Plus, there’s a convenient go/no-go gauge scribed right on the muzzle device. The system ensures concentricity, precision, and repeatability. The SurgeX is constructed of 17-4 stainless steel and Cobalt-6 (Stellite). The baffles are made of both, while the body, front cap, and mount are made of stainless for durability. Rugged manufactures all of their products in-house. Rugged ships the SurgeX with a tiny 7.62 M3 muzzle brake (5/8×24), 7.62 front cap, and tools to service the suppressor. Rugged also makes 5.56mm front caps to optimize sound suppression and flash hider caps in both calibers, as well as a titanium front cap to reduce weight. They offer a range of dual taper muzzle brakes and flash hiders. Additionally, you can swap out the R.U.M. for a direct thread adapter from Rugged.Rugged’s dual taper muzzle devices include a go/no-go gauge to ensure you properly tighten the locking collar. The SurgeX is belt-fed rated with no barrel length restrictions, and Rugged backs it up with an unconditional lifetime warranty — even if you do stupid things with your suppressor. They’ve developed a reputation for their warranty and customer service, and it’s a key element of their brand. We tested the SurgeX on a Beretta BRX1 with one of Rugged’s dual taper flash hiders. Detaching and reattaching the silencer with the R.U.M., it stubbornly held zero. Point of impact shift between suppressed and unsuppressed was approximately 2 MOA, and we consistently shot sub-MOA groups with and without the SurgeX. It was quiet and comfortable to the naked ear. The SurgeX performed well and is a great choice for a versatile, modular 30-caliber suppressor.
