Today we bring you another Build Sheet. These reader-submitted pieces allow you to share your guns and the details thereof with the larger audience of RECOIL readers. We know that “build” isn't always the correct term people prefer–and that's OK. We'll  consider submissions for any firearm, and sometimes guns that are just totally cool you want to show off. For details on how to submit your own, head down to the bottom of the article

PURPOSE

Put together a rifle that was easily packed in a bag and shot the (at the time) plentiful and cheap 5.45×39 cartridge.

THE BUILD

The basis of this rifle is an Arsenal SLR-104 chambered in 5.45×39. The barrel was originally 16 inches and had the standard AK type flash hider. The barrel has been cut down to 14.5 inches with a Gemtech Quickmount Muzzle Brake permanently attached for use with a silencer. The original gas block was replaced with one by Venom Tactical which also provides a front sight. The base rifle came with a folding stock to help achieve a smaller package when being stored or transported.

A US PALM (RIP) grip replaced the factory option to provide storage of batteries and well as more comfort and an Echo Nine Three V1 sling plate was installed. The factory sling mount in the stock was removed to prevent rattle noises. The sling is an original Vikings Tactic Sling held to the front sight by a Blue Force Gear U Loop.

The selector/ safety lever is from Krebs Customs to allow bolt hold open and finger manipulation. The charging handle has had Circle 10 extended handle bolted on for a more positive grip. The factory trigger was replaced with a Tapco G2 group.

A Texas Weapons Systems Dog Leg Rail top cover with a rear peep sight was installed to provide an optics mounting solution. The optic is an Aimpoint H1 Micro in a factory mount that does co witness with the sights.

A more recent upgrade to this AK is the Magpul handguard with grip stop kit. For the price it is hard to beat this handguard especially when optics and laser are not being used that need to hold zero. The hand guard has been fitted with an Impact Weapon Components/ Haley Strategic Thorntail SBR mount and a Surefire M300 Mini Scout light and clicky tail cap.
