RECOIL, the groundbreaking firearms media brand you know and love, is proud to announce the appointment of Rob Curtis to the role of Features Editor. Curtis comes to RECOIL Magazine from Military Times. There during the course of a long career he reported in words and pictures on our nation’s warriors doing business in every major shithole the US has set foot in from 1998 to 2015. He also started Military Times GearScout in 2007 as a way to keep military members aware of products that could fill capability gaps or replace ineffective standard issue equipment.

Curtis explains,

“At some point I spent enough time bullshiting with line guys in the field to understand how much they appreciated good gear.”

Rob was with the first group of journalists on the ground in Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2001; there he witnessed the mission to clear the Taliban from Kandhar and, years later walked, he walked patrols with the US Army in the Kornegal Valley. He also spent time in Iraq as an uninvited house guest at several of Uday's and Qusay's homes and witnessed battle of Karbala, among other key engagements.

He knows the best backroads between Vitina and Gjilan, Kosovo, and can repair a broken down Lada. He once talked his way out of official detention when authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic suspected he was an insurgent; he's slept on a runway beneath the wing of a broken C-5 Globemaster aircraft more than once, and has the sixth-man's understanding of how little room there is in the four-passenger compartment of a USMC LAV.

As an avid outdoorsman and longtime member of a rescue unit he's as familiar with outdoor and ‘adventure' equipment as he is with weaponry and kit.

“This is the bit of the press release where a PR flack writes a quote for someone in the company, saying how excited they are to have the new guy joining them,” said Editor in Chief Iain Harrison. “In Rob's case it's actually true. We're chuffed. He brings a wide range of skills to the table and will be a key player as we add to our portfolio.”

RECOIL Digital Editor David Reeder echoes the sentiment. “I've known Rob professionally for several years now and have many times asked for his advice or perspective. He's a great journalist and a better man – his addition to the RECOIL team is a serious coup.”

‘Talk about a dream job,”’ Curtis says. “I’m honored to join the staff of the best publication in the industry.”
